Is POST LUNCH SIESTA really good for us?

Often times we feel lethargic or sleepy after our lunch and trust me- it isn't just you. This is a normal phenomenon ,feeling tired, sleepy or not being able to concentrate after your afternoon meal is common and maybe induced due to sleep cycles or because of a digestion pattern. Unlike common beliefs this should not arise concern and even is considered beneficial by a lot of doctors and nutritionists.. This post lunch nap is also known as 'post lunch siesta.'


Contrary to popular belief it is recommended to take an afternoon nap which can range from 30 to 90 minutes. This power nap is extremely beneficial for people suffering from hypertension. It can boost digestion levels and also help with balancing blood sugar levels and in some cases PCOD too .It does not in any way mess up your sleep schedules, infact it is known to be particularly helpful in cases of insomnia and weight loss.

A post lunch nap or siesta is generally recommended between the hours of 1 p.m- 3 p.m You cannot have your lunch after 3 pm and expect a power nap to benefit you. A post lunch nap takes advantage of your body’s natural sleep/wake cycle which is advisory to range anything between 1 p.m-3 p.m.


However there are things one should keep in mind while trying out the post lunch siesta to ensure the overall performance of this method. We should not indulge in caffeine,chocolates, stimulants like tea or cigarettes of any sort. One should avoid sleeping for more than 30 minutes , indulge in mobile surfing or sleeping with loud music or the television on. There has been customs of afternoon nap all over the world in various regions and cultures. For example, many European countries close down their shops and restaurants in the afternoon and people would enjoy their afternoon nap. In Italy this time period is known as riposo . Chinese companies give a sleep break of one hour to their employees which is mandated by their government. Spanish companies too give their employees two hour siesta break , however only the second hour is utilized for the afternoon nap. In Bengali cultures it is imperative for everyone in the household to indulge in an afternoon nap , colloquially known as 'dupurer ghum'


Post lunch Siesta has a lot of benefits , it does not just refresh you and gives you vigour to work more , but it also helps with your overall physical and mental health. So, the next time your boss reprimands you for sleeping at work, do let him know about the benefits of post lunch siesta.
